Sonic Mania - Encore DLC

A Blast from the Past, Revitalized

Sonic Mania Encore DLC continues to delight and frustrate in equal measure. It is an exciting addition to the iconic Sonic franchise, serving nostalgia on a silver platter alongside new elements that keep the gameplay captivating.

We are introduced to two new characters making a grand return from "SEGA Sonic the Hedgehog," Mighty the Armadillo, and Ray the Flying Squirrel. Both bear a strong resemblance to Sonic and Tails from this 90’s arcade game spin-off, thus fitting effortlessly into the world of Sonic Mania. However, they lack the kind of uniqueness that would make them truly stand out.

The DLC comes with a new mode called Encore Mode, altering the usual Mania mode and showcasing a handful of additional gameplay elements. Encore mode starts with Sonic encountering Mighty and Ray trapped in a machine; Sonic then frees one of those trapped inside. Disappointingly, the implication of this supposedly significant choice quickly fades. But, fear not, fellow gamers, as the player continues to progress, the pairing between Sonic and the new character opens a new path to collaborate, bringing greater possibilities for exploration and power-ups.

Thanks to the "Encore Mode," the game gets some pleasant modifications. The remixed stages have additional features and obstacles tailored for Mighty and Ray, and the Angel Island zone further spices things up, although it is notably short and lacks a significant challenge. Mighty can ground pound and survive a hit when curled, while Ray can navigate through the air using momentum, adding a quick and dynamic way of getting around and elevating the gameplay to a whole new level.

However, not everything is smooth sailing. The bosses' difficulty level hasn't been noticeably adjusted, and maintaining the required 50 rings to reach the bonus level poses its unique challenges.

The pinball bonus stage is perhaps one of the most prominent changes in the DLC. You'll find yourself at a pinball table instead of the Blue Sphere game, which, although it drains quickly of its charm once you unlock all characters, is a refreshing change from the usual.

Sonic Mania Encore DLC successfully reimagines the nostalgic game experience with new mix-ups in features, characters, and challenges while keeping its classic charm intact. However, there's always room for improvement, such as varying the difficulty of bosses and ensuring the choices players make have more significant and long-lasting impacts on the game.

Pros

  • New characters introduce new abilities and dynamics
  • Encore Mode remasters the level design
  • The pinball table bonus level is a fun alternative
  • The existence of lives tied to character adds an interesting twist.

Cons

  • The choice of characters doesn't significantly change gameplay
  • Lack of distinctiveness in new characters.
