Miyazaki Embraces Co-Op Evolution: FromSoftware Contemplates Future Game Changes After Elden Ring Mod Success

Elden Ring's Hidetaka Miyazaki doesn't oppose the popular Seamless Co-Op mod and may consider including extensive co-op features in future FromSoftware games.

Elden Ring's director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, says he might consider incorporating complete co-op gameplay in future FromSoftware titles.

In an interview with PC Gamer before the release of Elden Ring's expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, FromSoftware's president commented on the widely-used Seamless Co-op mod.

If you're unfamiliar with it, Seamless Co-op allows players to join their friends for an uninterrupted multiplayer session, offering a unique experience when exploring the Lands Between.

While Elden Ring does have a co-op system, it is somewhat restrictive and doesn't enable constant play with friends.

According to Miyazaki, he does not mind players using this mod during their adventures and noted that the intent when designing the game’s summoning mechanic was to make it more casual.

He highlighted that they do not actively oppose or want to downplay the idea of playing through the entire game together. He expressed that in Elden Ring, the intention was for a more relaxed playstyle—allowing players to join, defeat a boss, and then leave. This design choice doesn’t impose technical limitations on the player but allows them to focus and then move on.

Miyazaki also mentioned that Given the mod's popularity, FromSoftware might rethink its approach to co-op in future games.

This doesn’t mean they won't consider new ways, like playing the entire game with a friend from the beginning to the end, for their upcoming titles.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree was released on June 21 and is available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and for those who prefer personal computers. The expansion pack garnered a 4.5-star rating. In his review, Hardware Editor Rhys Wood characterized it as "rather unusual compared to most present-day additional content" and lauded it as "the largest and potentially superior DLC expansion that FromSoftware has offered thus far."
