Google Meet Unveils AI-Generated Meeting Notes Feature for Enhanced Collaboration
Aug-29-2024
Google Meet is introducing a novel artificial intelligence feature designed to provide users with AI-created notes after meetings conclude. Recently, the tech giant announced the rollout of this capability for its Workspace users. Known as ‘Take notes for me,’ this feature leverages the power of Gemini AI to document and summarize key discussion points throughout a meeting. While the feature was initially showcased by the company last year, it has only recently transitioned from its beta phase.
In a blog post by Google on its Workspace platform, it was clarified that the feature will be introduced gradually, starting from August 27. Users may need to wait up to 15 days before it becomes available on their accounts. The ‘Take notes for me’ option is accessible for Google Workspace users subscribed to either Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or the AI Meetings & Messaging add-ons.
Once the feature is live, users can locate it by clicking on the Gemini AI icon, which appears as a pencil with a sparkle in the upper right corner of the Meet interface. Engaging with the icon will present a brief overview of how ‘Take notes for me’ operates, along with a button to activate it. Upon activation, a new document is automatically created in the organizer's drive.
Initially, this AI-driven feature focuses solely on note-taking rather than transcribing every spoken word; however, users have the option to enable full transcription. Additionally, the same menu interface provides an option to record the meeting as well.
After the meeting ends, the generated document containing the AI notes will be linked to the event in the Calendar and shared with all attendees within the organization. It remains uncertain whether individuals outside the organization will receive access to this document by default.
Attendees can also click the same icon at any time during the meeting to view the summary that has been compiled so far. Although this feature is now available on Google Meet, it is currently limited to desktop or laptop usage, and note-taking is only triggered when participants converse in English.
